Sweet, smoky, tangy, and slightly spicy, this homemade barbecue sauce is perfect for glazing grilled chicken.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons avocado oil , for sautéing
- 1 white onion, chopped
- 4 fresh peaches, peeled, pitted, and chopped
- salt , to taste
- 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
- 3 tablespoons medium harissa paste
- 1⁄2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1⁄4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1⁄4 cup granulated sugar
- black pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
Directions
- Heat some avocado oil in a saucepan. Add the onion and sauté until very tender and soft, without allowing it to brown.
- Add the peaches and a little salt. Cook until the peaches begin to soften and break down, watching the mixture carefully so the natural sugars do not burn.
- Add the garlic, harissa, apple cider vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, granulated sugar, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and smoked paprika.
- Continue cooking until the ingredients are softened and thoroughly combined.
- Blend the sauce until smooth. For an especially smooth and silky texture, press it through a fine-mesh strainer. Straining is optional.
- Refrigerate until ready to use. If chilled, allow the sauce to warm slightly before brushing it onto the chicken.
- Grill the chicken until nearly cooked through. Brush the sauce over both sides during approximately the final 5 minutes of grilling.
Notes
Do not use this sauce as a chicken marinade. Its high sugar content can cause it to burn on the grill.
